How do I apply?

If you want to apply for ESIC status, you must be an Australian business under the Corporations Act 2001.  In addition, you must pass the Early-Stage Test; and either the 100-Point Innovation Test or The Principles-Based Innovation Test.

In order to assist with your ESIC application and assessment of these tests, POP Business offers the following services:

POP Business can provide you with an analysis of your company’s eligibility for the ESIC qualification and/or review your self-assessment and supporting documentation.

The expert team can provide you with a written analysis of your ESIC assessment with supporting documentation as well as liaise on your behalf with the ATO for your report submission. Your application will be submitted to the ATO.

For investors looking seeking a sophisticated investor certification, our accountants can review your assets and income to ensure you meet the requirements. We can then provide you with an accountant’s letter certifying your eligibility to invest in ESIC companies.

Early-Stage Innovation Company (ESIC)
Frequently asked questions

The ESIC or Early-Stage Innovation Company scheme was designed by the Australian Government to make an Australian small business look more attractive for investment.  Companies that qualify can offer shares to qualified investors.  These investors receive tax incentives, promoting reinvestment in Australian companies and the economy.

There are no government fees associated with the ESIC qualification, however the application process can be time consuming.  We recommend consulting with a qualified accountant who can assess your company’s cash flow, business structure, assets, income and more to ensure you meet the requirements.

An ESIC is an Australian small business that has passed a series of criteria and assessments to be awarded ESIC status.

This status indicates that the company is demonstrating innovation, growth potential, competitive advantages & more, therefore making them a prime candidate for investment.

Companies holding an ESIC status are more attractive for investment from qualified investors.

Investors receive the benefits of shares in the ESIC company and various tax incentives to promote their investment in these innovative, Australian businesses.

With these increased investment opportunities, companies can improve their cash-flow situation and use it to expand and innovate.

Your company must:

  • Be an Australian business under the Corporations Act 2001;
  • Pass the Early-Stage Test;

Pass either the 100-Point Innovation Test or The Principles-Based Innovation Test
